Introduction

When our inexperienced group of hypoglycemia sufferers undertook the production of a survey, initially, it seemed easy and straightforward. It was "obvious" what we wanted to find out. We learned quickly, however, that it was a complicated task open to many variations in interpretation. A fluctuating team of up to twelve members from four countries was guided by a small core of five from three countries for the one and one half years it took to design and administer the survey. It attracted over 1200 respondents from all over the world, far exceeding our modest hopes of getting 100 to take the survey! Throughout, we picked apart each other’s ideas, played Devil’s Advocate, suggested, modified and turned each others’ ideas upside down. Despite all this, we can still look back and see things we could have done better.

Although our survey may not meet strict scientific criteria, we still feel that the numbers are significant, and we hope that the results will provide useful information that may help to improve the quality of life for hypoglycemia sufferers. If we can get the attention of some of those in the medical community who don’t understand or know how to treat hypoglycemia, or worse, those who deny hypoglycemia exists, then we will have surpassed our highest hopes.

It has been a long time coming, but the results are finally being analyzed. The first section, "Diets", is complete. What follows are some of the highlights along with our comments. You are encouraged to draw your own conclusions, and use the information as you think it will best benefit you. The percentages used in the text are rounded to the nearest whole number. If you would like to see the raw figures and percentages, as well as take a look at the original survey forms, and the forms for the other sections, they can be accessed at the main survey site: http://huizen2.dds.nl/~hypo/survey

We remind you, this survey is not meant to be a diagnostic tool, nor medical advice. Instead, it is a means to find out if there are any unrecognized correlations between hypoglycemia and other seemingly unrelated factors. One goal is to find different causes of hypoglycemia, another to correlate successful remedies to those causes. We are not doctors. If you have questions about your medical status, consult a health care professional.

We do hope that you find the results useful.

Feel free to make copies of all results documents for your personal use or for a friend or relative, including to share with health care providers. If you want to make these documents available to others on an ongoing basis (publication in print or on a website), please do *not* post or copy the documents itself. Instead, provide a link, or post only the Introduction Section (this section). This will enable others always to retrieve the most recent version.

Advice given in these documents  is never medical advice, as we do not have a medical background. If your symptoms show similarities with those of hypoglycemia, please see a doctor; several other serious (and even life-threatening) diseases may mimic the symptoms of hypoglycemia. Also, before making serious dietary changes we would strongly advise you to see a doctor or a nutritionist.

If you have any comments that may improve these documents we would be happy to receive your note at the address below.
